F. A. Q.

You will find below a list of frequently asked questions. If you have a question that is not fully answered, contact Coach Saccenti.

Q: Where do you practice?
A: Perryville Middle School is our home. Click here for a map to Perryville Middle. Perryville Middle is located at 850 Aiken Avenue in Perryville Maryland. Aiken Avenue is the first light on the Cecil County side of the Rt. 40 bridge connecting Perryville and Havre de Grace. We also practice on Monday nights at Perryville Elementary, which is just down the road from the Middle School at 901 Maywood Avenue. Click here for a map to Perryville Elementary.

Q: When is practice?
A: We practice on Monday, Tuesday and Friday (if we don't have a game) nights. Practice begins at 6:40pm and ends at 8:40pm.

Q: What about games?
A: Fall is about practice. In Winter, we will play a lot. See our team schedule to get an idea how much. In Spring, we play in AAU tournaments, at least three and sometimes four weekends a month. If you play for the Slam in both the winter and the spring, you can expect to play between 75 and 100 basketball games.

Q: What is an AAU basketball team?
A: The short answer is that it is a team that is a registered affiliate of the Amateur Athletic Union. Such a team is covered by the AAU umbrella insurance policy, and is eligible to participate in AAU tournaments.

Q: But what is an AAU basketball team, really?
A: AAU basketball represents organized youth basketball at its finest in this country. If you are a serious youth basketball player, you are eventually going to play for an AAU team, if you don't already. An AAU team consists of the best basketball players from their region. The worst player on a good AAU team is going to be a team leader on his high school squad. The best player is going to be working for a college scholarship.

Q: What is the time commitment?
A: Three nights a week in Fall for boys who aren't playing another sport. In Winter, we will be busier; figure four to five nights a week (but not during the holidays). Spring is three nights a week, plus weekend tournaments.

Q: Is my son good enough to play AAU ball?
A: This is not the right question. The question is, "does my son love to play basketball?" If the answer is yes, then the talent will come. I can teach your son to play. I can't teach him to want to.

Q: Can I still play in my recreation league during winter?
A: If you want to. I encourage the boys on my team to play as much basketball as they can. Boys that want to play for their local rec team during the winter can do that, so long as we communicate and coordinate.

Q: Can I still play other sports, while playing AAU basketball?
A: Yes. We will work to accomodate players who want to play football and soccer in the Fall, because this is the slowest part of the season. In Winter, you should figure basketball as your only sport. In the Spring, our players try to find baseball and lacrosse teams that practice on nights that we don't. Boys at this age should be trying out different sports; that is expected.

Q: What is the age requirement?
A: See the Players Wanted page for a discussion of this.

Q: What height baskets do you use?
A: AAU teams shoot to 10' baskets, regardless of age.

Q: What size basketball?
A: 28.5
